DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES DURING 2022-23

  • Technical talk on “Engineering the future – Industry Overview – Civil Engineering in Next 30 years” delivered by Mr Sreekanth APV, Executive Director, Infrastructure, Arcadis Asia – organized by IGS Student Chapter on June 18th, 2021

 

  • Webinar on GOOGLE MEET PLATFORM on “INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT – ROLE OF KERALA PWD” on 19thJune, 2021 was delivered by Ms Darlene.C.D’Cruz, Chief Engineer, Public Works Department, Government of Kerala. This was organized by IEI CIVIL STUDENTS CHAPTER.

 

  • Technical talk on “Structural Strengthening and Rehabilitation including Foundation Strengthening” organized by proposed ASCE student chapter in association with IEI student chapter, Marian Engineering College on 22nd June 2021. The expert was Mr S. Anwar Hussain, Rtd Deputy Chief Engineer, LSGD.

 

  • Back to Campus – Alumni Interaction organized by Career and Cell Placement and Civil Department on July 2nd, 2021–Er Nanma Gireesh , Co-founder NestAbide.

 

  • July 15th2021 - Department bids an emotional farewell to the CE 2017-2021 batch as they start a new Journey through MICROSOFT TEAMS meeting at 3pm.

 

  • August 2, 2021- Department congratulate the exemplary performance B.Tech 2017-21 batch. 43 students score CGPA >8.0. 5 students with CGPA>9.0.

 

  • MTech 2019-2021 batch Third semester exam results – 100 percent pass with 8 students securing SGPA 10 and three students securing SGPSA >9.0.

 

  • Onam festival was celebrated by the staff of the Civil Engineering Department following the Covid protocols on 20thAugust 2021.

 

  • The inaugural meeting of the ASCE Student Chapter was conducted through google meet on 28 September 2021at 6.00 PM. 77 members were present for the program. The meeting started with the welcome address by Dr. Vinod. P (HOD, Civil Department). Dr Vinod welcomed Mr Narsimhachary Poloju, Mr Palanisamy , the special invitees from other student chapters, management of MEC, student office bearers of ASCE student chapter and student members of ASCE student chapter.

 

  • Technical Session on Automating Construction through 3D printing - A technical talk was delivered on 28thSeptember 2021by Mr. Sriram Ranganathan (Product manager and sales, Tvasta Manufacturing Solutions Pvt. Ltd) on the topic Automating Construction through 3D printing.

 

  • Department of Civil Engineering organized a webinar for S7 and S4 students on 30thSeptember 2021on Zoom platform on GATE exam titled “ALL ABOUT GATE 2022”.

 

  • New Office bearersof IGS Student chapter for the year 2021-2022 assumes office on 5thOctober 2021.

 

  • Workshop for First year Civil Engineering Students titled “Know your College” – was organized in the Civil Department on 5thNovember 2021. The workshop had following sessions – 1. Interaction with Alumni, 2. Talk by Er Nanma Gireesh, Translational Civil Engineer, Co-founder of NestAbide and a TEDx Speaker. 3.Familiarisational with clubs/associations etc and 4. Campus Visit.

 

  • New office bearersof the Bhoomitrasena Club were eleted through Google Meet platform on 10thNovember, 2021. Faculty-in-charge (Professor Deepthi Dennison, Prof. Pramod Raj TP (ME DEPARTMENT)). The student office bearers are :Secretary (Pradosh S Jayagopal), Programme Co-ordinator (Mary Julie) , Treasurer (Ansila S), S7 representative (Nikitha Joy), and S3 representative(Lekshmi S Sudharman).

  • Inauguration of Vegetable Patche on World Soil Day by Rev Msgr. Wilfred E on 6thDecember, 2021. This event was organized by the Indian Geotechnical Society – Marian Engineering College Student Chapter.

  • TECHNICAL TALK TITLED “INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES IN BUILDING TECHNOLOGIES – SESSION 1”JOINTLY ORGANISED BY IEI CIVIL STUDENTS CHAPTER AND ASCE STUDENT CHAPTER - This technical talk was delivered on 22-12-2021by Er. Rahul Leslie, Structural Engineer, Structural Design Unit, PWD. Er Rahul focused on the areas of earthquake resistant masonry construction.

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES DURING 2020-21

  • NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INNOVATIONS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

The Department of Civil Engineering accomplished the task of conducting National Conference on Innovations in Civil Engineering-ICE-2021 on July 22nd and 23rd, 2021. This is the first conference conducted online by the department considering the pandemic situation. A total of 75 articles were selected after peer review for oral presentation under 5 different sub-themes covering core areas of civil engineering.

  • 5-DAY ONLINE FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME on  “DE-HAB DEMOLITION AND REHABILITATION OF STRUCTURES”

This Programme was sponsored by APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University.  Faculty members from colleges affiliated to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University attended this programme. The FDP was coordinated by Rani V, Assoc.Prof and Dr. Narayanan, Department of Civil Engineering

This five-day FDP provided comprehensive knowledge of the areas of demolition of buildings (methods of demolition and case studies, recycling of demolition waste and equipment used for recycling) as well rehabilitation of buildings (methods of rehabilitation and case studies). This programme included also the coverage of topics such as CRZ rules, building rules, conditions under which demolition of structures is required, structural design aspects considered during demolition of buildings, effective reuse of waste, evaluation of structural safety and rehabilitation of structures. The online FDP was conducted on Microsoft Teams and Google Meet.

  • An expert talk on “Career Opportunities” by Er.Shaji Jacob, Institute of Engineers, Kochi Centre for CE and ME VIII semester students was organized on 27th February 2020.

  • The Department of Civil Engineering organized a Mix Design Workshop for fourth semester students by Mr. Shelly Fernandez, Managing Director, Qcrete Ready-mix (India) Pvt Ltd on 26th February 2020.

  • An expert talk on “Basics of Making Quality Concrete and Introduction to Green Concrete Concept” by Mr. Shyam Kumar Syama Prasad (CEO & Director, CETARC Pvt. Ltd.) was organized on 4th Feb 2020.

  • MoU was signed with BIMLABS and EICL on 31st January 2020. The MoU aims to improve employability skills of faculty and students and provide an opportunity to the students to take up socially relevant projects.

  • An expert session on “Professional Excellence” was organized on 28th January 2020. The session was handled by Er. Sreekanth APV, Executive Director, Arcadis Asia.

  • Gopalakrishnan Nair, Chairman, State Centre of IEI inaugurated the Civil Engineering student chapter of IEI [Institution of Engineers (India)] on 27th January 2020. The inaugural session was followed by a technical talk on “Planning Design and Construction management of Signature Bridge, Delhi” by Er. Jose Kurian (Senior Advisor,KIIFB)

  • MoUwere signed with UNO Technology Private Limited and Qcrete Ready-mix (INDIA) Pvt on 9th January 2020. These MoUs aim to provide job oriented training to students and training for internship program/seminars/training respectively.

  • As part of QURIO’19, Civil Engineering Association organized technical events ‘RECUEZA”, Miniature Model Town Building using Construction Waste Materials and “BRAIN CRANE”, Tower Crane Construction on 23rd November 2019.

  • The Department of Civil engineering organized expert talks by Mr. Unni Bhaskar (Managing director, UNO Technologies) and Ajith G Nair, Professor, RIT Kottayam on 7th November 2019 at IEDC Seminar hall. Mr. Unni Bhaskar gave an explicit class on “Air traffic control cabin Construction” and Dr. Ajith G Nair gave a detailed session on “Coastal Protection structures, Waves and Ocean Currents.

  • The Department of Civil Engineering organized “Research talks” for the M. Tech students from 5th to 28th November 2019, with faculties as resource persons. The presentations helped the students to refine their research topic and develop the presentation skills.

  • The Civil Engineering Association was inaugurated on 5th September 2019 by Er. Anwar Hussain, Retd. Engineer, LSGD. The inaugural session was followed by an expert talk on “Building Materials”. Er. Anwar Hussain gave a very explicit class for the students from an industrial point of view.

  • “ONE STUDENT ONE TREE” Bhoomithra Sena Club initiative to plant trees in college premises was inaugurated by Dr. S Narayanan (HOD, Department of Civil Engineering) on 30th August 2019.

INDUSTRIAL VISITS ORGANIZED IN 2019-20

 

  • The Civil Department had arranged an industrial visit for VI semester students to Nellai Concrete, Product & Construction Company (P) Ltd., Gangaikondan, Tamilnadu (Sleeper Manufacturing Unit) on 4th March 2020 as a part of their course on Design of Concrete Structures.

  • The Civil Department arranged an industrial visit for VI semester students to Neyyar Dam on 15th February 2020 as a part of their course Design of Hydraulic Structures.

  • The student members of Bhoomitra Sena Club visited an exhibition organised by Haritha Kerala Mission in association with Suchithwa Mission on 21st January 2020.

  • Industrial visit organized by IGS Student Chapter of the department on 25th October 2019 to UPS, Ambalathara helped the M.Tech Geotechnical Engineering students to gain a field exposure to SPT and Piling Work. The students were guided by Dr. Jaya V, HOD, and GEC Bartonhill.

  • The Civil Department arranged an industrial visit for VII semester students to Trivandrum Central Railway Station on 4th October 2019 as part of their course Transportation Engineering I.

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES DURING 2018-19

  • The Department of Civil Engineering organised National conference on Innovations in Civil Engineering (ICE 2019) on 11th April, 2019. The conference was inaugurated by Dr. Rajesh Chandran IRTS, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager. The main events of the conference included Keynote address by the Chief guests, Seminars, Invited Talks & Paper presentations by UG & PG students of the department as well as those from other institutions.

  • As part of ICE 2019, poster presentation competition was held for final year M. Tech students on 12th April 2019. Dr. Jaya V, HOD CE, GEC Bartonhill was the chief guest.

  • Bhoomithra Sena Club organized an Intercollege General Quiz competition ‘Jalnix’ in observance of World Water Day celebrations on 22nd March 2019.

  • The Department of Civil Engineering signed MoU with Kerala State Nirmithi Kendra on 7th March 2019. MoU aims to provide training program to propagate construction practices and also to update recent developments in design and construction field and
    also assist students to submit projects to research funding organization for financial support.

  • Dr. R. Shivasankar, Professor,NITK, Surathkal gave an expert lecture on “Fundamentals of Geotechnical Engineering” for IGS student members on 9th February 2019.

  • IGS student members participated in the 3rd annual commemorative lecture in the memory of Prof. T.S. Ramanatha Ayyar and Symposium on ‘Laterites and Lateritic Soils’ organized by Indian Geotechnical Society held at LBSITW on 8th February 2019.

  • Faculty members of Civil Department, Linda J, Aswathy Sasikumar, Twinkle Mohandas and Anand Dev B.G performed duty in the NSS 7 day camp organized by the NSS cell of Marian Engineering College at Govt.U.P.S, Kaniyapuram from 24th to 30th January 2019.
  • Civil Engineering Association in association with CAD DESK organized “Virtual reality show” for the faculties of Civil Department on 6th February 2019.
  • The planting of saplings in college campus was held as a part of Bhoomithra Sena club activities on 7th January 2019. Very Rev. Msgr. Wilfred E (Manager), Prof. Tomy Michael (Director), Dr. Ruby Abraham (Principal) and Rev.Fr. Reny Rudolf (Bursar) led the planting of saplings.

  • The Civil Engineering Association was inaugrated on 16th October 2018 by Ar. P.B. Sajan, Joint Director, Costford. Ar. P.B. Sajan gave an expert talk on “Sustainable Buildings” for the students. As a part of inaugural ceremony, a photography exhibition was also organized by the students.

  • Under ‘Visiting faculty Program’ of Civil Engineering Department, an expert talk on Geology by Dr. Ajith G Nair, Assistant Professor, CET was conducted on 5th October 2018 for III semester students.

  • IGSMA 2K18, a quiz event organized by IGS Student Chapter conducted prelims on 15th September 2018 and mains on 3rd October 2018 in the Civil Department

  • As a part of the celebration of the World Ozone Day, the Department of Civil Engineering initiated Bhoomithra Sena club. The club is formed with support from Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, Government of Kerala. It aims at encouraging students to appreciate the environment and to react positively to environmental issues. Dr. D.Thankamony, Retired professor, CET inaugurated the Bhoomitra Sena Club on 17th September 2018.

  • The Department of Civil Engineering organized an expert talk session on ‘Development of Project Ideas’ for the VII semester students on 10th September 2018. The sessions were handled by Dr.Thrivikramji.K.P, Director, Geoinformatics Division, Centre for Environment and Development (CED) and P. Reghukumar, Senior Design Engineer, CED and N.R. Chrips, Scientist, CED.

  • In August 2018 floods, a team of Civil Engineering faculties visited flood affected areas at Ayroor Grama Panchayat, Pathanamthitta for technical help on 30th August 2018.

  • IGS organized a site visit to Green Field Stadium, Karyavattom on 9th February 2019 for IGS student members.
